Shannon A. Schunicht Lecturer Army Officer Political Scientist Microbiologist

Shannon Schunicht

Shannon SchunichtMr. Shannon Schunicht is a 7 year veteran of the United States Army, and physics teacher whose career exemplifies perseverance and success. Having most recently taught physics at the University of Syracuse, Mr. Schunicht is the creator of the “Mnemonic Writing” technique, which is a method of recollection and memorization of mathematical and scientific formulae. Since developing mnemonic writing, he has visited universities all over the country, giving lectures and talks on his work.

The development of his technique is the result of nearly losing his life after being involved in a plane crash in 1985 during a military exercise. He spent three weeks unconscious, and having sustained damage to his brain, had to quite literally re-learn physics, amongst other things. Mr. Schunicht developed mnemonic writing to help him memorize and re-learn information that he had lost after his fateful crash. This way of making mnemonic descriptions of complicated formulas for ease of recollection. This technique [vowels: mathematical operations] allows ANY formula to be turned into a memorable acronym. Common acronyms (FOIL & My Dear Aunt Sally) are remembered indefinitely. Other complicated formulas are only temporarily recollected, never to be remembered again. Using Mr. Schunicht’s mnemonic technique, complicated formulas may be made the same. exCePT i buiLD rabbiTS 4 caTS oN 2 HaTS is the acronym for The Quadratic equation. As everyone remembers Dr. Seuss and the power of rhyming and related structures, mathematical education is revolutionized due to learning: mom=m/m=bob=b/b=pop=p/p=wow=w/w=1

Mr. Schunicht works around the clock to share this technique and hopes other more apropos acronyms will be made by students perfecting their algebraic skills.

Mr. Schunicht began his education at Florida State University, earning a bachelor’s degree in philosophy and political science in 1983. Then in 1994, he completed bachelor’s degrees in both biology and microbiology at Texas A&M University. He maintains affiliations with both the International Leprosy Association and the American Association of Physics Teachers. In 2010, he received an award via the Royal Society of Sciences in Upsala.
